Are You Able to Crack It? The Forgotten Dutch Creation That Forged the Contemporary World
There are numerous contenders for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, though, that title should go to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring over 90 days,” notes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured within a week.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, which turned logs into planks with almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build vessels more quickly than anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch naval, economic and cultural supremacy across Europe and the globe.
The Original Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, contends the writer, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part transformed its circular movement to vertical action for the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead a measured step each stroke.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius was to integrate these parts so they operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each downward stroke while moving on every return stroke. It was a remarkably clever application of fundamental components.”

Construct a machine that turns rotary motion into up-and-down action. You have these components only: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two rods. A “sleeve”, which is a tube or housing through which one of the bars can slide snugly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a stand, so the components don’t collapse.)
